Author: Angela Hunt Genre: Biblical Fiction Paul, Apostle of Christ is the story of two men. Luke, as a friend and physician, risks his life every time he ventures into the city of Rome to visit Paul, held captive in Nero's bleakest prison cell. Before Paul's execution, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of "The Way" and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. But Nero is determined to rid Rome of Christians. Paul has survived so much--floggings, shipwreck, starvation, stoning, hunger and thirst, cold and exposure--yet as he waits for his appointment with death, he is haunted by the shadows of his past. He wonders if he has been forgotten . . . and if he has the strength to finish well. Two men struggle against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to bequeath the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Reviewer: Laura J. Davis I don't think I have ever read a book where the movie came first and the novel came later, but such is the case with Paul, Apostle of Christ by Angela Hunt. While I enjoyed the movie, at times I found it very hard to hear because the actors almost whispered their lines, so reading the book (for me at least) filled in those gaps. And while Hunt stayed close to the screenplay, she did add a few "what if" scenarios that rounded out the novel that made it a very satisfying read. Like the movie, the book emphasized the love Christians had for each other, for Jesus and for the lost and leaves those who know the Lord feeling inspired. If you are looking for a bit more insight into Paul and Luke's relationship and what the early Christians endured during Nero's reign, this book will definitely fill in all those gaps.
