Author: Susan May Warren Genre: Romantic Suspense Series: Alaska Air One #1 Pages: 320 Release Date: March 5, 2024 Publisher: Revell When country music star Oaken Fox joins survivalist Mike Grizz's new adventure show in the Alaskan wilderness, he just wants to boost his fan base. But when tragedy strikes and Air One Rescue must save them, Oaken wants to quit. Too bad his producer has other plans--signing him on with Air One Rescue as a recruit and making a reality show. EMT Boo Kingston did not join Air One Rescue to train a celebrity. But she's a rookie to the team, so yes, she'll train Oaken and keep him alive and not for a minute pay attention to his charm. And then five women go missing from a resort during a bachelorette weekend gone wrong. Now, Air One and the rescue team will have to use all their skills and manpower--including Oaken--to find them before a blizzard settles in. But can they work together before tragedy strikes? Reviewer: Kristina Hall This is a good start to what promises to be an exciting series! Susan May Warren is one of my favorite authors, so, of course, I jumped at the chance to read one of her latest releases. Both Oaken and Boo were engaging, sympathetic characters who went through a lot of hard times. Their backstories added to the depth of the plot, and I enjoyed "meeting" them. I'm also anticipating reading the stories of some of the side characters. The plot moved along at a good clip and contained the adventure and romance I've come to expect when picking up a Susan May Warren book. I did have a little difficulty with the writing style for the first few chapters, but that went away as I read on. I appreciated that the romance and language were clean and that the main characters were growing in their faith. I did disagree with a bit of the faith content, but that didn't take away much from my enjoyment of the story. Overall, I found One Last Shot to be an exciting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, romance, and adventure. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the Alaska Air One Rescue series. Disclosure: I received this book free from Revell through Interviews & Reviews. Reviewer: Amy Smelser Alaska is a place where one may go to hide from the world. Or try to redeem a reputation. In this new series by author Susan May Warren, her two characters, Boo Kingston and Oaken Fox, attempt to do those two things. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how this story was going to go when Oaken, a country music star, needs to sign up for a survivalist adventure to repair his reputation after a fight that goes viral. Things certainly don’t go as planned when his guide is unable to guide. And trying to survive in the Alaskan wilderness is no joke. Boo, Kingston (we do find out her real name later) has left her home and family to join up with her cousins in Alaska as an EMT on the Air One Rescue team. Boo is the one hiding after she starred in a reality show that put her in a humiliating light and took many situations out of context. She just wants to begin anew and be by herself as much as possible. Then she meets and rescues Oaken. Keeping to herself is no longer an option when businesses are on the line now. As well as her heart. This was a great kickoff to more adventures with author Warren and her world of characters. It also really showed the powerful hold that social media and entertainment today can have on a person, as Oaken and Boo were both going through similar circumstances. Add in a mystery thread of danger, and you have quite an adventure. Not to mention, we get to know the rest of the team as well. I was provided a copy of this novel from Revell Publishers through Interviews & Reviews. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own. Reviewer: Anna Bottoms This book weaves a great story of romance and danger with life lessons about the power of forgiveness and trust, as well as some of the pitfalls of social media. Boo is hiding out in Alaska, working with a rescue squad, and keeping her head down. She doesn’t need friends, and she certainly doesn’t need the attention a country music star brings to the team. She’s surprised by his humble desire to learn and be a part of a team. Maybe it won’t be as bad as she thinks. Oaken is in Alaska to redeem his career on reality television. When things go awry and he’s rescued by a beautiful woman, he has no idea the adventure it will lead to. He soon finds himself uniquely suited for the Alaska lifestyle and is tempted to stick around and see what makes Boo tick. I love the way faith is woven throughout the story, in the messy way life is with its doubts and hopes. The characters faced real issues and obstacles to overcome, but they were still people I wanted to connect with. Wonderfully written, this is a book I’ll read again. If I had one thing that was an issue for me, it was Boo’s name. It was distracting, and I didn’t like it. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell through Interviews & Reviews. This is my honest opinion. Reviewer: Conny Withay “You can trust that God loves you and that he'll carry you through the storm," Oaken says in Susan May Warren’s novel, One Last Shot. The first book in the Alaska Air One Rescue series, this three-hundred-and-twenty-one-page paperback targets those who like a Christian contemporary romance about being on a rescue team in the Alaska wilderness while learning to forgive and love. Containing no profanity or sexual scenes, topics of injury, attempted murder, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes acknowledgments, a teaser of the next book in the series, the author’s biography, and advertisements. In this first book in the series, musician Oaken Fox agrees to go to Alaska and shoot an adventure show, trying to redeem himself in the public's eye. When he is praised for helping rescue the show's survivalist, he agrees to film with the Air One Rescue team. But to rookie EMT Boo Kingston, she doesn't want the attention due to her past fiascos involving social media. The two must work together as they go on dangerous callouts, learning to trust God to rescue them from the anger, fear, and pride of selfishness. This is a good start to a series about heroes who risk their lives to save people who are stranded or hurt in rural Alaska. I liked learning about the inner workings of a rescue team as well as the often-materialistic agendas of the entertainment industry. I appreciated the calling out to God for help as the protagonists forgave themselves and others. Some may not like a series involving the cold, dangerous terrain of Alaska, but it is not overdone. Others may not like the focus on Oaken's and Boo's insecurities and fears, although it plays well with the story. I found some of the characters and plot stereotypical at times. There is no mention that Jesus is our one and only savior, who died, shed His blood on the cross for our sins, and rose the third day. I prefer all pronouns of God capitalized for reverence. If you like a romance series where you want to cozy up in a warm blanket while reading about heroes who rescue those in Alaska, this one about learning to trust others may heat you up. Thanks to Revell and Interviews & Reviews for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review. Reviewer: Tammy Lunsford Dangerous rescues and inclement weather make this an easy book to fall into and not want to climb out until you finish it. The members of Air One Rescue are true heroes who put their lives on the line daily to rescue people. Everything they do is technical and requires intelligence and bravery. It was interesting to read how these rescues work. Country music superstar Oaken Fox has joined a survivalist for his adventure show. Unfortunately, their trip starts out with tragedy, and Air One Rescue has to rescue them, which is how the show's producer comes up with the idea to let Oaken be a part of the team. EMT Boo Kingston is not happy about her extra passenger. She feels he will only get in the way. Both Oaken and Boo are fighting demons from their past. As they work together and get to know one another better, both characters can sense some hope for the future. There is also an underlying mystery that is building through this story, but the plotline is more about redemption and relying on faith to see you through life, in the good and bad times. This book was action-packed with daring rescues, but it also has emotional depth as the characters grow in their faith and learn to forgive others and themselves. While I did enjoy the fictional story and excitement, the life lessons were touching as well. Get ready for a wild ride. It is definitely a one-sitting read because you will not be able to stop reading once you start. Thank you to Revell for a copy of this book through Interviews & Reviews. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Reviewer: Mindy Houng "There's the story we create and the story we're created for. Maybe that's what this adventure is all about." I've read quite a few of Susan May Warren's books, and every new release is like a breath of fresh air, filled with fast-action adrenaline, heart-stopping romance, and soul-edifying spiritual truths. And I do so love how her characters from previous series overlap and weave themselves into new plots, triggering nostalgia while diving headfirst into a new and exciting adventure. We're back in Alaska for this series, and it was fun to hang out with the Kingstons while getting to know their cousin Boo from Minnesota. Boo, with her mad survival skills and EMT instincts, is hiding from social media and the fiasco that upended her life while rescuing people with the newly formed Alaska Air One Rescue team. Oaken is a charming country music star needing some reality TV show time to boost his image on social media. Of course, accidents, unpredictable Alaskan weather, and meddling friends and co-workers turn both of their lives upside down, and it's truly a rollercoaster ride physically and emotionally from the beginning to the end for Boo and Oaken. It was also fantastic getting to know Moose, the head of the rescue team, in this book. Though the next book sounds like it will be about his brother Axel, Moose had some great spiritual advice for Oaken throughout the book. I can't wait for his story! If you enjoy romantic suspense with a great faith thread, this book is a must-read.
