On a Summer Tide

Picture
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Three Sisters Island #1

Sometimes love hurts--and sometimes it can heal in the most unexpected way.

Camden Grayson loves her challenging career, but the rest of her life could use some improvement. "Moving on" is Cam's mantra. But there's a difference, her two sisters insist, between one who moves on and one who just keeps on moving.

Cam's full-throttle life skids to a stop when her father buys a remote island off the coast of Maine. Paul Grayson has a dream to breathe new life into the island--a dream that includes reuniting his estranged daughters. Certain Dad has lost his mind, the three sisters rush to the island. To Cam's surprise, the slow pace of island life appeals to her, and so do the locals. One in particular: Seth Walker, the scruffy island schoolteacher, who harbors more than a few surprises.

I really enjoyed Fisher's On a Summer Tide. Filled with hope, love, and lyrical writing, it really makes a great read for any summer day. Let's start off with the cover. I applaud Revell for making such a fantastic cover because that's what drew me to the book in the first place.

Although I have to admit at first I was strongly considering  not finishing it because of how slow it was at the beginning, I'm so glad I stuck around until the middle, because that's when it started speeding up and when I really started to enjoy it. And even though Fisher's writing style isn't *for* me, The way she melds all of the plot strands and POVs together just astounds me and really makes a person want to devour her writing.

I also appreciate how relatable and delightful the characters are in general to read. It was such a treat getting to know them throughout the slow start of the book! I also love how Fisher integrated the adoption of Cooper into the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this! It was a solid read and one I would recommend to just about anybody.

“See? It grows on you, this big dream. That’s the thing about dreams. They’re contagious.”

This quote is a description of just one of the
themes running through Suzanne Woods Fisher’s heartwarming story, On a Summer Tide.

Paul Grayson, has a big dream that his daughters are having a tough time getting behind. During their struggles, other themes begin to appear, including loss, grief, brokenness, acceptance, and renewal, which weave their way through the story from beginning to the very end. Each Grayson sister, Cam, Maddie, and Blaine, also struggle with their own vision of self, silently comparing themselves against the others. What comes from this is frustration, annoyance, jealousy, but also awe and love.

Not a single member from the Grayson family is untouched by story’s end.

Suzanne Woods Fisher has a wonderful way of intertwining the seriousness of hurt and growth with the comedic. Names such as the Never Late Ferry for a ferry with no schedule, and Baggett and Taggett, the local sporting goods shop where Sunday services are held, are only a couple examples of this humor. Even the name of the dock, Boon Dock, brings a sense of humor whether intended or not. Characters such as Paul Grayson and Peg Legg are also used to lighten the mood and bring a little comic relief.

The author also has a way of allowing you into the family, understanding each character a little more through their own eyes and the eyes of others. You are on this journey with them.

I found it very difficult to put this book down, and often times could be found in my room reading when I should have been doing something a little more productive.

By the end of the book, my heart was full. I waited and watched as the characters’ feelings began to release themselves from their hiding places, and the decisions made from them. God is in our plans, and this story shows how He works all things for good.

Would I recommend this book? Most definitely.

Three sisters: Camden, Maddie, Blaine. They have a different life, thoughts, likes. Their future plans are a bit foggy, uncertain.

"Every decision comes with a cost": this is a saying their mother used to tell them. In fact, life is full of decisions, sometimes good, sometimes difficult.

In the book, there are other interesting life topics to think about: Nature, workaholic, trust, lies, friendship.

Reading the story, you can laugh, cry, love the characters, dream.  I recommend it, enjoy.

"You don't 'earn' purpose. . . .. . Our souls aren't a matter of commerce, we're a matter of faith."

Camden Grayson is a purpose driven woman, obtaining multiple achievements in her career at the young age of thirty; lists and spreadsheets are her life blood, so when her widowed father goes off the grid by selling their family home in order to purchase a small island in Maine, she struggles to understand. Joining her two younger sisters and father, along with her anxiety-prone adopted son, Camden trudges to Three Sisters Island, expecting a short stay before her job grabs her undivided attention once again.

What the Grayson family discovers on the island is merely a dream, a dream that will take hours of dedication and weeks of purposeful renovation. Can they put their differences aside long enough to bring the old island back to life; possibly pulling out the weeds in their own relationships in the process? In other words, can they become a family once again. It seems that God knew what He was doing all along when Paul Grayson purchased a remote island off the coast of Maine.

Suzanne Woods Fisher has penned a lovely story, creating a captivating family saga where every member learns a little bit more about what love is, and conversely what it isn't.

Suzanne takes her vivid descriptions of personalities, her humor and satisfying plot twists into the contemporary world to give the reader another engaging story. I rationed myself to only a few chapters at a time so I could savor the experience!
