Meeting Her Match

Picture
Author: Jen Turano
Genre: Historical Romance
Series: The Matchmakers #3
Pages: 368
Release Date: July 16, 2024
Publisher: Bethany House

Miss Camilla Pierpont, a renowned matchmaker and influential member of the New York Four Hundred, has vowed never to marry after suffering a devastating heartbreak during her debut years ago. However, when she is nearly abducted along the Hudson River, she finds herself rescued by an annoyingly outspoken, albeit fascinating, gentleman who challenges her in a manner she wasn't expecting.

After learning that Camilla Pierpont has enjoyed success with taking wayward young ladies in hand, Mr. Owen Chesterfield travels to the Hudson River Valley determined to convince Camilla to sponsor his sister, who is in desperate need of social rehabilitation.

Knowing her life is in danger, Camilla agrees to Owen's proposition and travels with him to West Virginia, finding herself charmed by the less-than-formal attitude of his small hometown, as well as by Owen himself. But danger waits in the shadows, disrupting what she knows would be the most spectacular match she's ever made--her own.

Oh my, the wit and banter Camilla and Owen had with one another and unleashed in their conversation was gold. This is the story where Camilla, the matchmaker, meets her match, much to her chagrin and our amusement.

The beginning of this book, how the characters meet, may be called a meet-cute. But in its wildness, it certainly sets the stage for the rest of the book. There were many laugh-out-loud moments along the way with a very real threat of danger that stalked these characters.

I liked Owen. I cannot really explain what drew me to him. He was funny, without trying to be. He sincerely did not understand why some of his comments were so off-putting to women, that is until Camilla explained some things to him. Their interactions were my favorite parts of the book, and they were quite a memorable couple.

There are other somewhat outlandish characters. Especially since Camilla goes with Owen to West Virginia to help his sister become more of a refined woman. This was an amusing read that I really needed.

If you love a book filled with dialogue that is sharp, witty and fun, then you will probably enjoy Meeting Her Match by Jen Turano.

This is the third book in the Matchmakers series and can be read as a standalone, but this is such a fun series I highly recommend reading them all.

With her trademark humour and wit, Turano has delivered a book that will have you exhausted just reading it. I felt like I was watching a tennis match between the two main characters as they bantered back and forth. Camilla seemed determined to find fault with just about everything Owen said or did, (even though it was justified). But, to me, he was the consummate gentleman and perfect for Camilla.

The side characters (right down to the pig) were hilarious and made this book hard to put down. Meemaw & Aunt Elma were gritty and determined gals who would do anything to ensure Owen and Camilla would get together. The results are hilarious.

While I enjoyed this book immensely, as a Christian book I expected it to have some kind of faith element, sadly it did not. However, if you like a good, clean read, I know you will enjoy Meeting Her Match.

I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House through NetGalley for my honest review.

“Consummate ladies did not find themselves fearing for their lives often, if ever, but that certainly seemed to be what she was facing now.”

Miss Camilla Pierpont and Mr. Owen Chesterfield had gotten off on the wrong foot (understatement of all understatements). It was all a big misunderstanding, of course, when Camilla thought her knight in shining armor was nothing but a highwayman in disguise. Except he rather looked the part as well, swathed in ill-fitting clothes and sporting a mighty big stature.

To her chagrin, Owen turned out to be an extremely wealthy business magnate from West Virginia who had a little matchmaking opportunity in mind. Not with her, of course, (of course!??) but rather Owen had traveled to New York in order to request her services for his hooligan of a sister (who wasn’t nearly as much trouble as her reputation).

It worked out rather well, really. Camilla needed to disappear from danger (the real highwaymen) and no one would ever expect her to flee to West Virginia, to a place where pigs walked (walked?) through yards of its mansions and giant cats became best friends with dogs, closely tied to meddlesome “meemaws” (cackle, cackle) who tried to sneak apple pie recipes under pillows and in pockets.

What Camilla never expected and could hardly believe herself was . . . . . . .So fun to read!!! So, so fun. The story’s West Virginia setting gave the author ample room to expand her characters to act and react out of character while moving the story forward at a charming pace, allowing Camilla to wave her magic matchmaking wand, setting Owen up for the surprise of his life, he had somehow (in spite of Camilla’s aversion to marriage) managed to meet his match, if they could only test out that kiss!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Interviews and Reviews. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

Meeting Her Match was a charming read! Jen Turano never fails to make me laugh while reading her books.

Having gotten to know Miss Camilla Pierpont a bit in the previous book (“To Spark a Match”), I was excited to read her own story, and it didn’t disappoint. Right from the get-go, we are taken on quite the adventure as Camilla falls into one predicament after the other.

I was at first a little bummed that Camilla wouldn’t be exploring a relationship with Charles from the previous book, but I quickly got over that disappointment as we got to know the hero, Owen Chesterfield. Truly, no other character could have been quite as perfect for Camilla as him. Their banter was always hysterical and I love how they aggravated each other so often, especially in the beginning - it certainly made for an entertaining relationship. I also liked how their relationship grew realistically. It wasn’t too much of a situation where they don’t like each other one minute and then are in love the next minute - it all progressed very naturally and I enjoyed seeing that happen across the pages.

All the other characters were a hoot, too. Meemaw, Aunt Elma, Charles, Luella, Leopold... the list goes on. They all really added to the fun of the novel.

The only thing that I wished would have been included more was a faith theme. It was extremely light, bordering on nonexistent. It was still clean and inspirational, but I was hoping for a message of some sort to be woven into the pages since it’s published by a Christian publisher.

Apart from that, it was a delightful novel, and I look forward to whatever the author pens next.

Meeting Her Match by Jen Turano is the third book in The Matchmakers Series, which, like all of her books, can be read as a standalone. This light-hearted story follows Camilla Pierpont, self-proclaimed spinster and matchmaker of the New York 400. We first meet Mr. Owen Chesterfield, a member of the Wheeling elite, who traveled to the Hudson River Valley, determined to convince Camilla to take his sister Luella in hand.

Turano takes her readers on an exciting adventure to the quaint town of Wheeling in Almost Heaven, West Virginia, during the Gilded Age. Once there, we meet Owen’s delightful Meemaw and Great-Aunt Elma, who are convinced that Camilla and Owen are perfect for each other. How they go about proving that they are right to Camilla and Owen will have you laughing out loud.

As always, Jen Turano penned a fun read full of witty banter, with laugh-out-loud shenanigans by her characters, and action scenes that keep one riveted to their seat. Once you read one of Turano’s books, you will discover why they call her the best and funniest inspirational voice in historical Christian fiction.

Meeting Her Match was a great ending to a fun series, and I cannot recommend this delightful fun light-hearted story or series enough!

If you are looking for a light romantic comedy, you have found your story! Camilla is a high-class matchmaker who has vowed to never marry. She has concentrated her time on being proper and poised.

Owen Chesterfield enters Camilla's life in the most dramatic of ways. He needs help to refine his sister Luella. Not only does Camilla have a huge task ahead of her, but she has embraced the entire Chesterfield family.

The entire story will keep you on the edge of your seat and fully engaged in the story. I laughed out loud and anticipated the end of the story. If you're looking for a comical romance, this one will not disappoint.

This is the book to read when the world is throwing lemons at you.

Jen Turano’s Meeting Her Match could not have come at a better time, as I needed such a book to read. This writer has never failed to draw at least a smile from me whenever I read her novels. Her choice of names for her characters and the funny situations they find themselves in are always a delight to me. Meeting Her Match, the third book in the Matchmakers Book series has all the elements of this beloved writer’s work.

Meeting Her Match, like the other books in this series, is set in the 19th century in New York City. Readers will get the opportunity to meet Camilla Pierpoint, a minor character in the second book of the series. Camilla Pierpoint, a member of the New York City elite family, has declared herself a spinster for life after a heartbreak. Owen Chesterfield is a big brother who is looking to harness the skills of Camilla to help transform his unruly sister, Luella. Will the meeting between the two change Camilla’s stance or not? Journey with these two people as they travel from New City to Wheeling, West Virginia, to protect one woman and make a refined woman out of another. In this journey, you will encounter budding relationships, including a friendship between a cat and a pig, gun-toting grandmothers, and recipes with hidden intentions.

I really love this novel. I found myself laughing at some of the antics of the characters. Jen Turano always delivers a Christ-centred message in her writings, which is always a plus for me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good laugh. One can never be disappointed with Jen Turano’s books.
