In Too Deep

Picture
Author: Lynn H. Blackburn
Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Romance

How do you choose between loyalty and the truth?

When the Carrington County Sheriff's Office dive team is called in to recover a body from a submerged car, they aren't prepared to find an encrypted laptop--or an unsettling connection between investigator Adam Campbell and the dead accountant.

Adam turns to his friend Dr. Sabrina Fleming to recover the files from the laptop. But the deeper they dig, the deadlier the investigation becomes. When evidence implicates members of Adam's own family, he and Sabrina will have to risk everything to solve the case.

The truth could set hundreds free--but someone is willing to do whatever it takes to silence anyone who threatens to reveal their secrets.

From the first few pages of In Too Deep, I was hooked. Truth be told, I was hooked by the cover and back copy. I love a good mystery/suspense, and this book delivered. The storyline was both believable and action-packed. The author takes the reader all the way through the story using exceptional character development and vivid settings. I felt I was right there in the thick of the plot and rooting for the characters I grew to adore. The best part was the ending–a complete surprise! This would make an excellent movie given the thrilling pace, romantic sub-story, and concluding twist.

While there was certainly a Christian tone, with characters speaking to God throughout the story and declarations they were praying for each other, I felt there could have been more insight into how the characters lived out their faith, especially given the harrowing plot. However that being said, that never detracted from the joy of journeying through In Too Deep. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good suspense novel. In fact, I will be passing the book along for others to read.

WOW. In Too Deep by Lynn H. Blackburn definitely shocked me. I'm not sure what I was expecting, except I definitely knew that I wasn't expecting a beautiful, well-written, and well-solved suspense.

I haven't read suspense in a good couple of months, and In Too Deep definitely makes me want to read more suspense. Why is this? Ms. Blackburn's characters aren't shallow, for one. They're not perfect. They have depth, character, and personality. Yes, they have flaws. But underneath they have a plain good core. This isn't really common among today's fiction, so I loved seeing that. The plot and storyline didn't have many gaps at all- I definitely loved reading about how they cracked the case. I would say it was pretty realistic as far as suspenses go.

One thing - the content. In Too Deep is a completely clean novel- however, it does briefly touch on heavy topics, like human trafficking. I wasn't uncomfortable reading it as it was viewed as a negative thing and was NOT glorified at all, but I did want to point that out as a heads-up to those who might get triggered easily when reading something like that. :) Faith, redemption, forgiveness - Christian themes like those - weren't central to the plot, so I wouldn't consider this as a book with heavy Christian elements. However, the characters are mostly all Christian, and many times characters encourage each other to trust in God, pray, etc.

Overall, In Too Deep was just beautifully written. Gorgeous cover, amazing writing style, and a complicated but well-weaved and understandable plot. What's not to love about a suspense novel like that? I highly recommend this book and will definitely be looking for more books by Lynn H. Blackburn.

"Wow. This woman was actually helping them solve her murder from beyond the grave."

"They killed me. Ask Adam Campbell." Chilling words self-written on the abdomen of a drowning victim. What did they mean exactly, and why had Lisa Palmer, a prominent local accountant, tried to contact Investigator Adam Campbell just days before her demise?

When the deceased's laptop is brought to the surface of the river where she allegedly drowned, the Carrington County Sheriff's Department turns to local professor of cybersecurity and computer forensics, Dr. Sabrina Fleming, for help retrieving dozens of encrypted files. Adam and Sabrina have maintained a curious friendship; platonic on the surface but deep around the edges. Working on this case together already has the potential to either preserve or destroy the precious tie that binds them.

A thrilling blend of romance and intrigue, "In Too Deep" adds great depth to Blackburn's "Dive Team Investigations" series, even though her best may be yet to come.
