H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer's Journey

Picture
Author: Carol B. Amos
Genre: Christian Living/Self-Help

Every 65 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease.

What would you do if your loved one received the devastating diagnosis?

Fifteen million unpaid caregivers are thrust into the caregiving role by necessity, with very little understanding of how Alzheimer’s disease has, and will, slowly deteriorate their loved one. H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey Helps, Organizes, Prepares, and Educates caregivers for the difficult road ahead, providing knowledge, tools, and advice that Carol B. Amos and her brothers learned or developed during their eleven-year journey providing care for their mother.

The Caregiving Principle™, Carol’s novel approach to caregiving, is the central theme and is a simple method that provides a deeper understanding of a person with Alzheimer’s disease and a framework for the caregiver’s role.

With words of inspiration, personal reflections, anecdotes, and original family email communication throughout, H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey conveys concepts in an open, honest, and creative manner. Carol and her siblings share their thoughts, concerns, emotions, and deliberations and encourage caregivers to take care of themselves, while providing inspiration for the remainder of their journey.

H.O.P.E for the Alzheimer's Journey by Carol B.Amos is a great resource to have for those with loved ones facing Alzheimer's. The acronym stand for: Help, Organization, Preparation, and Education. Ms. Amos openly shares her family's experience caring for their mother with Alzheimer's while lending H.O.P.E to others. She gives practical advice on in home care, nursing facility options, as well as an in-depth view at the disease itself and its effect on a family.

Included in this book are email correspondence between Ms. Amos and her siblings describing their observations on the state of their mother, care options, and personal feelings about what they are going through. The family shares their ups, downs, and occasional humorous moments as they band together for their mother's needs. This inside look can be quite valuable to other families experiencing the same thing offering a positive example and encouraging perspective.

Even though Alzheimer's can be a devastating disease, H.O.P.E for the Alzheimer's Journey describes a family who's faith in Jesus Christ has helped them to overcome the heartache with grace and a focus on the good things counting their blessings along the way. I recommend this book not only to those with loved ones facing Alzheimer's but also anyone working in elderly care positions. This book is insightful, educational, but most of all inspirational.

What a touching and informational book on such a "thief in the night" disease. Here, Carol takes us from the beginning signs of her mother's disease. From the beginning, she and her siblings took on the challenge together to make sure her mother received the medical care, medicines, assistant living care, etc., that was needed at every step of her journey. This was no way an easy task as, in the beginning, all three siblings did not live in the same city as her mother.

This book is an important first step for all those who are facing now facing the daunting task of caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer's disease. It answers the initial question of "Where do I start?", "What type of doctor should we see?", "Are there initial tests that should do done?", "Are there medications that should be started?". The questions are endless!!!

Mrs. Elizabeth Boyd was an energetic, forward-thinking woman who was fortunate enough to have raised three loving, considerate and caring children who grabbed this disease by its reins and made her journey as smooth, non-fearful and comfortable as humanly possible; a true testament to both her and her husband.

Carol Amos did a wonderful job of walking the reader through her personal story. Along with her brothers it is evident of the care they gave to their mother suffering with Alzheimer. The emails they shared throughout this journey were very touching. I was my mother's caregiver while she too battled Alzheimer and in many ways I could relate to Dr. Amos' story. I would highly recommend reading this book.

In my Christian walk as a deacon for nearly 30 years, I visited many nursing homes and private homes to have prayer with and commune those who suffered from Alzheimer's. The most devastating reality is the effect the Alzheimer's has on family members and close friends. I have seen caregivers cope until they were no longer able to be of assistance to their loved ones. This book allows those going through the same journey to see it from a loving and Christian experience. The Holy Spirit guides us through tribulations and helps make us stronger to endure that journey. Thank you Ms. Amos for allowing others to experience your journey. Richard J. Ross, Sr.

I have given this book to several caregivers who found it very helpful and informative, as well as encouraging. I recommend sharing this well written and documented book with any one who finds themselves in the position of caring for someone who is living with Alzheimer's.
