Reviewer: Michelle Holmes Although the first few chapters of Freedom's Price seemed to be overly dramatic (everything was emotional) and a bit inconsistent (see below), the book settled into smoother reading as it went along. It became harder and harder to put down and hung in my mind like good books do. I think that it would have helped to describe some of the characters early on rather than jumping right in. I couldn't figure out the Durnings. Mrs Durning appeared to be a very fearful person, clinging to Catherine, worried about being attacked by Spaniards or pirates. Captain Durning is portrayed as in control and stubborn. Then quite suddenly they switch and Mrs Durning has an "authoritative manner" and "was not appeased" and Captain Durning "blanched and stammered". There is a strong Christian flavor to the story. I like the way Catherine turned to God for help throughout the book and was delivered from evil at the end. Tom is shown maturing, letting go of a long held grudge. Rourke is shown as a faithful friend and mentor, going beyond the call of duty. Aurelia showed true love by laying down her life for others. Catherine and Tom were both able to give up their own passions for what God led them to do instead. Christine Johnson showed a good knowledge of ships and did a good job of giving the reader a glimpse into the evils of slavery. This book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group. Reviewer: Sabrina Wade Wow! What a ride! The worst part about reading this book...I had to put it down to sleep! I think I experienced more than a handful of emotions through each chapter. Phenomenal job painting each scene. As the chapters unfolded, I was able to envision myself right there with the characters. Freedom's Price, unveiled a tip we all tend to forget. While evil has a way of perceiving itself as all powerful and champion, with the Good Lord nothing is impossible. Strongholds can be broken. Even after several generations, truth will be brought to the light. And the Good Lord's justice and vengeance always surpasses our imagination. Get your copy and come away feeling courageous, charged, and empowered to continue to walk honestly in spite of political and social customs.
