An Interview with Michelle Dennis Evans

Picture
Michelle Dennis Evans writes picture books, chapter books, young adult contemporary novels and enjoys dabbling in free verse poetry. Her published books have been found on the Amazon Best Seller list several times.

Michelle is passionate about seeing people move forward and overcome their struggles to live a healthy fulfilling life. She believes you can find healing and hope through reading stories, fiction or truth.

After growing up on a dairy farm near a small country town, Michelle met the man of her dreams in the hinterland of the holiday destination of the Gold Coast that would become their home. She fell in love with the Gold Coast (and her future husband) and all the magnificent views it has to offer.

Michelle spends most of her days educating, socialising, sporting her four children and her nights writing and studying while encouraging her awesome husband who works tirelessly in the family business.

Michelle’s life is full and at times overflowing but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Michelle, welcome to Interviews & Reviews! Let's get right into it. How long have you been writing?

Ha! Great question. I wrote my first book, The Googles versus The Manelopes, when I was eleven years of age. It was self-published (ie handwritten and illustrated, complete with stapled, cardboard cover). That was when my dream of becoming an author was ignited. But then in high school, I was silly enough to listen to my teacher when she told me my stories and writing were immature and nearly failed me. That’s when I gave up. I believed I wasn’t a good writer and became a closet poet. It took me fifteen years to find the courage to write publicly again.

How horrible! Teachers really need to be careful with their words, they never know if they are ruining someone's dreams. Clearly, you decided to prove your teacher wrong. So, how many books have you now written?

You mean completed? I’ve started around a thousand . . . hmm. Sink, Drift, or Swim will be my fourth published book. I have a coffee table poetry ebook, ‘Life Inspired’ which is filled with gorgeous photos taken by my brother and sister. I’ve written a YA trilogy which includes Spiralling out of Control (book 1) and Spiralling out of the Shadow (book 2) but book 3 is still in the editing phases and book 4 (yes I wrote a fourth book in the trilogy) is only a draft.

Tell us about your latest book, set to release next month.

Sink, Drift, or Swim is about the gorgeous Rina who has a serious coffee addiction. But it’s the guy behind the counter, Josh, who draws her to the coffee shop. Rina’s Dad draws her away from the coffee shop and out deep sea fishing for a day to have some one on one time with her. The boat with a bunch of men and boys is the last place Rina wants to be when a freak waves hits. Stranded, she clings to her pink life jacket as she questions everything about her family, life and love.

Sounds interesting. What books do you enjoy reading?

I love a good historical fiction, but I’ll read almost anything if the story grabs me.

Do you talk to your characters?

Hehe … not really, but I often dream about them or wonder what they’re up to when I’m not writing about them.

What is your favourite scripture verse and why?

Philippians 4:8 is my all time favourite verse because when I remember to focus on things that are good, pure, and worthy of praise, everything that isn’t so good fades away in the distance.

A wonderful verse, to be sure! Thank you for visiting with us today Michelle.
