When his wish comes true, he and his bike are inseparable. Until he receives a birthday gift that soon replaces his beloved bike. What will happen to his bike? Reviewer: Jane Mouttet
Ashley Frerking has written a story about a young boy who gets exactly what he wants for Christmas, only to leave it in the dirt a couple months later when he gets a more exciting gift. The story is quite simplistic without much depth. The theme of the story was not obvious to me. I was disappointed in the illustrations by Isabella Russell. There were times when the illustrations didn’t really match the text. For example, it talked about Declan’s “baby sister,” but the illustration showed a preschooler. There are also several illustrations (the background to the text) that show Declan riding his bike at a point in the story after he left his bike in the dirt. This could be confusing to young readers. The style of the illustrations may not appeal to young children. I would not add this book to a K–12 Christian school library. I do not think it will appeal to children. But, as always, I encourage librarians to check out the book for themselves. I received a complimentary copy of Declan’s Gift from the author through Interviews & Reviews. This is my honest review. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
