Business Practices, Biblical Promises

Picture
Author: Larry Scanlan
Genre: Christian Living

The Bible is not silent on the pressures and decisions required to build a career and be part of, or lead a successful business enterprise. The most significant portion of our day is consumed in the work place. The decisions we make about work impact our company, customers, family and all areas of our lives. They reflect the reality, or lack of reality, of our faith. Our decisions even impact people we don’t know or may never meet. Business decisions indeed have consequences. The purpose of this book is to inspire and encourage you to live out your faith in the business world, leaving an impact that counts beyond meeting company quotas or bringing home a paycheck. It is a practical guide that combines contemporary workplace and Biblical business stories with reflections and action steps to help you define your vision and purpose, make wise decisions, set priorities, overcome failures, find balance in your life, do God's will, and ultimately, make a difference.

Goodnight Sweet

Picture
Author: Leah Stanley
Genre: Memoir

She was twenty-nine years old. She had been married a mere eight months. Suddenly her precious grandparents needed her help. Equipped only with the documents provided by their lawyer, Leah Stanley navigated Medicare and Medicaid in the dark of ignorance, working her way along the tangled path of providing care for her grandma and grandpa who were suffering with Alzheimer's and an unspecified form of dementia, respectively.

In Goodnight, Sweet, Leah explores the world of elder care where she found that making the right decision on behalf of someone else was not always an obvious choice, and along the way she discovered that not every family member shared her vision of loving the people who needed care but were instead dazzled by the notion of inheritance. At times she was able to stand on nothing more than faith in Jesus Christ, but Leah moved through one difficult day after another, until finally she was able to look back and realize that Jesus had stayed exactly where He said He would--carrying her through the dark waters so that she could survive the indescribable world of a caregiver.

Peacemakers

Picture
Author: Peter Dixon
Genre: Christian Living

When is war a just war? Should outsiders intervene in civil wars, and how? How can Christians effectively engage in resolving conflict? How do we understand relational peacebuilding and reconciliation?

Peacemakers offers a moral framework on which to base our thinking about war and peace, undergirded by a solid confidence in God's sovereignty, as we face the uncertainty of the real world.

'I don't think we need to take responsibility for righting all the wrongs of the world like Superman.' he says. 'It is enough for us to do what we can, when we can, where we can.'
Peacemakers evolves at another level too. As the author takes us down an icy Kabul street, or allows us to observe children celebrating a shaky peace in South Sudan, we experience first-hand the backcloth against which international peacebuilding takes place.

Pall of Silence

Picture
Author: Eleanor Bertin
Genre: Memoir

Dearly beloved -- that's what the obituaries say -- never hinting at the conflict, shame or sin that lie behind the veil. In October 2012, Paul, the author's 18-year-old son was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking home from an evening performing with his punk rock band. Amid the grief of loss, she is burdened over his life that seemed to beheaded in the wrong direction and their strained relationship. Dogged by grief, guilt, b lame and shame, she relives every memory searching for that conclusive evidence that he did after all, belong to Christ. Clinging to the Biblical doctrines of grace, the truth she knows wrestles with the longing of her heart. Can she trust God, with even this?

Once We Were Strangers

Picture
Author: Shawn Smucker
Genre: Christian Living/Memoirs

In 2012, Mohammad fled his Syrian village along with his wife and four sons, escaping to Jordan through the wilderness. Four years later he sat across from Shawn Smucker in a small conference room in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Though neither of them knew it, Mohammad had arrived in Shawn's life just in time.

This is the story of a friendship. It is the story of a middle-aged writer struggling to make a living and a Syrian refugee struggling to create a life for his family in a strange and sometimes hostile land. It's the story of two fathers hoping for the best, two hearts seeking compassion, two lives changed forever. It's the story of our moment in history and the opportunities it gives us to show love and hospitality to the sojourner in our midst.

Anyone who has felt torn between the desire for security and the desire to offer sanctuary to those fleeing war and violence will find Shawn Smucker a careful and loving guide on the road to mercy and unity.

Clay Jar Cracked

Picture
Author: Cortney Donelson
Genre: Self-Help

Clay Jar, Cracked: When We’re Broken But Not Shattered guides readers through some of life's most painful and traumatic experiences. We are all like fragile jars made of clay, and life’s disappointments and tragedies threaten to destroy us. Financial ruin, the loss of a child, a daunting diagnosis, addiction, or even loss of faith leave cracks in our jars. Some are wider and deeper than others, but each weakens the whole . As these cracks occur, how do we keep from shattering? How can we find authentic joy within our cracks and avoid succumbing to hopelessness or bitterness? Clay Jar, Cracked provides bold, thoughtful, and compelling answers to these questions and suggests an answer to perhaps the most intriguing question of all: Could even the biggest cracks be worth it?

H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer's Journey

Picture
Author: Carol B. Amos
Genre: Christian Living/Self-Help

Every 65 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease.

What would you do if your loved one received the devastating diagnosis?

Fifteen million unpaid caregivers are thrust into the caregiving role by necessity, with very little understanding of how Alzheimer’s disease has, and will, slowly deteriorate their loved one. H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey Helps, Organizes, Prepares, and Educates caregivers for the difficult road ahead, providing knowledge, tools, and advice that Carol B. Amos and her brothers learned or developed during their eleven-year journey providing care for their mother.

The Caregiving Principle™, Carol’s novel approach to caregiving, is the central theme and is a simple method that provides a deeper understanding of a person with Alzheimer’s disease and a framework for the caregiver’s role.

With words of inspiration, personal reflections, anecdotes, and original family email communication throughout, H.O.P.E. for the Alzheimer’s Journey conveys concepts in an open, honest, and creative manner. Carol and her siblings share their thoughts, concerns, emotions, and deliberations and encourage caregivers to take care of themselves, while providing inspiration for the remainder of their journey.

Abandoned Into the Heart of God

Picture
Author: Alexandria Bagnell
Genre: Memoir

Your husband has said he's leaving you. For another woman? A mid-life crisis? To announce his homosexuality? How would you react? Who could you turn to?

Abandoned Into the Heart of God is Alexandria Bagnell's story of how she answered those questions with God's help. Alexandria shares her experiences to help women understand they are not alone. By writing practical, supportive and spiritual applications at the end of each chapter, she is able to help women:

  • Diminish the five stages of grief to obtain peace.
  • Combat hopelessness by learning and implementing God's plan for their lives.
  • Embrace new traditions leading to a unified family.

Not only is this book for women who are walking or have walked the journey of abandonment, but also for family members, friends, pastors, counselors and divorce support groups.

Abandoned Into the Heart of God is a story of God's mercy and grace, of forgiveness, of healing and recovery.

And, it's about His unconditional love for you.
