So why don’t we all read the Bible every day?

The author has discovered that each day, on average, we speak over ten thousand words, while we read thousands of words and participate in social media, often for hours, using multiple platforms as the days turn into weeks, months, and years. Yet the Bible, God’s Holy words, have become marginalized in our society; (statistic) only 46% of all adults of reading age actually have read the Scriptures, and that number is fading fast. Like all generations, we will pass away—our time is limited. Still, God’s word remains, just as Jesus said it would, and will lead us to redemption and eternal life if we spend even a small amount of precious time in it.

Sometimes humorous, often heart-wrenching and humble, these weekly devotionals are written with poignant reflections on faith, family, and friends. After all, at the end of life, what else really matters? Each will direct you to God’s word, which will then point you to Jesus and how to accept his offer of life in heaven when you die. Isn’t that worth a bit of your time?

The title of this book couldn’t be more appropriate! Author Larry Scanlan is almost 80 years old, and over 65 years of his life have been spent as a Christian. The opportunity to read God’s Word has convinced him that Bible study is a key to achieving eternal life, and he wants others to understand this also!

Wisdom of an Elder is a collection of 52 devotions, one for each week of the year. Each devotion is a cornucopia of scripture, personal recollections, and ‘good old common sense’. Scanlan’s writing is articulate, enlightening, and even conversational. I was encouraged to dig deeper into God’s Word and challenged to make a difference each week! This book is a great addition to my daily devotion time!
