Begin your journey through the Bible verse by verse! Reviewer: Conny Withay “This book is not designed to grant you all the answers but to spark your thinking, meditation, and prayer on every single verse,” Benjamin McGreevy writes in the introduction of Volume I of his series, Verse by Verse: A Daily Devotion Through the Whole Bible. This thick, 746-page, oversized paperback is designed for those who want a daily devotional that explains, examines, and reflects on individual verses, starting at the beginning of the Bible. Using the King James Version, this first volume in the series contains eleven chapters of fifty to ninety pages each that cover only Genesis 1 through 11. After a dedication, introduction, and practical guide, each chapter has grayed sections that list one verse at a time in a specific chapter. Multiple paragraphs are listed under Reflection regarding the verse that might include its history, an explanation of a word, or possible theories for discussion, along with a personal application. Since the book is a devotional, every few pages, which may cover one to two verses, the “Your Reflection” section has blank lines for the reader to record their thoughts. The end of each chapter includes key takeaways to remember. I have been reading through The Bible yearly for decades, and most often read it in chronological order as it is my favorite format. I like that this devotional is in depth because it covers one inspired verse at a time and draws the reader into applying the Scripture personally. In reading several verses in the first eleven chapters of Genesis, I appreciate that the author believes that Jesus has always been a part of the Trinity and that we are made in their image. There are interesting discussions about the Nephilim, dinosaurs, Noah’s ark, Nimrod, and the descendants who repopulated the Earth, to name a few. Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not understand how His Word is important and should be read daily. Some who are more scholarly may wish the chapters contained more technical explanations of original Greek words, but the devotional is a thorough reminder of the Lord and what He has done throughout history. With the book containing eleven chapters that dissect 333 verses, one is left wanting more. Some readers may find the cumbersome book hard to use. With kudos to the author for beginning such an arduous, devoted task, I wish the book listed that the King James Version (the main one I read) is used, which nowadays is important due to many of the newer “washed down” versions. If one verse a day is read in this devotional, it will take about a year to get through the book, so it should be recommended to prioritize reading the Word daily. If you are looking for a daily devotional that focuses on one Bible verse a day, this is an excellent choice, but please make sure to read more from God’s Word too, as the Holy Spirit directs you. Thanks to the author and Interviews & Reviews for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review. Leave a Reply. |
