Reviewer: Juanita Varela If Karen Witemeyer writes it, I know it is going to be a good story, and I am obviously going to read it. I have come to love her work and writing style. I enjoy reading when it is set in Texas, which I have found a common ground for the books I have read so far by her. This story was different from what I have read by her. This romance felt like a slow burn, which I pleasantly liked. I like a more fast pace or quick burn, but take it from someone who does not normally like these, this one was a keeper. Noreen O’Sullivan has a personal vendetta against spirits, and James Paxton is a deputy. Not a good combination as can be seen, but it was beautiful to see how these two fell in love. I like that there are faith elements in this book. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers through Interviews & Reviews. The characters are well written and easy to like (for the most part). I really connected with Noreen. She is a lot like me! Her passion towards temperance often gets her into trouble, but it doesn’t deter her from speaking her mind. When her past is revealed, the hurt and abuse that she suffered; it makes perfect sense that she is so adamant about the ills of alcohol. James is swoon-worthy with a capital S! He is proud to serve as a deputy for Albany, Texas. His passion for justice, protection and peace is apparent. I absolutely adore Luella, Jane and Martha! Their steadfast and loyal friendship helps Noreen to be found innocent of “crimes.” The main issue that is addressed in this book is alcoholism. An important issue for sure. This horrible disease runs through both sides of my family tree. Noreen was certainly impacted negatively by her father’s alcoholism. Poor Luella almost didn’t live because of her father’s alcoholism. It’s sad that in the late 1800’s, women almost had no way to escape their husbands’ abuse. Thankfully, that has changed.
