 Reviewer: Tammy Lunsford Harley Tatum is a hard charging PI who is fearless. Her sense of justice drives her and revs her engine more than anything. She has lost her parents to tragedy and her brother to drugs. She is, quite frankly, lost and living a somewhat empty life. The last person she wants to see is Jericho Bowie, the one responsible for breaking her heart in pieces. Jericho and his K-9 avalanche dog, Orlando, have arrived back in Copper Mountain. Jericho has his own set of issues and haunts from the past. He is also a control freak who blames himself anytime that anything goes wrong around him. He is a runner who runs from his problems. He knows, in his heart, that he has these issues, and his life is a little empty as well. The only difference is that he still has siblings to lean on, unlike Harley. They end up working together to find a source of pain for both of them. This drug lord seems to always be one step ahead of law enforcement. This story of suspense and mystery is fast paced and there is danger from not only bad people, but also from the horribly dangerous weather of Alaska. This was about second chances, but most importantly it was about realizing that neither of them are in control. They need to quit blindly going into dangerous situations and also realize that God is in control. It was an emotional story of loss and pain, but also a redeeming story of letting go of the pain and the past in order to live a full life. Forgiveness is a key element of the story as well. I love the descriptions of the beautiful Alaskan scenery, which just further shows God's handiwork in creation. Absolutely nothing. This is one of the best second chance stories I’ve read, and it’s not a romance but romantic suspense. Amidst chasing down a villain who’s hunting you at the same time, it seems there’d be no room for reconnection and forgiveness, but somehow it works in the most satisfying way. Riveting adrenaline rushes juxtaposed against tender moments make this a book I didn’t want to put down. I love the characters who were so well written I felt like a participant in their lives, not just an observer. I also enjoyed revisiting people from previous series. Threads of faith flowed seamlessly through the lives of the characters in the most authentic way, which made this book not just great but inspiring as well. I highly recommend it. Reviewer: Diana Lea Scent of Hope, the second book in the Call of the Wild K-9 series, brings us back to Copper Mountain, Alaska where Jericho Bowie and his rescue dog Orlando are part of search and rescue in avalanche country. When the local sheriff pulls together a team to track down the local thug, Sorros, it includes Jericho… and Harley Tatum, a recovery specialist who just happens to be the woman from his past. Sparks, pain, and tension between them show up right from the start. There is so much for them to work through. The good news is that even though Harley and Jericho have not seen each other in years, they still know one another so well they can practically finish the other’s thoughts. I was completely invested in their hearts healing and the possibility of them moving toward one another. At the same time, the suspense thread builds with steady momentum. The danger isn’t just Sorros—it’s also the harsh Alaskan weather, the treacherous terrain, the risks of search and rescue, and even a memorable moose encounter. All of this adds to the unpredictability and kept me engaged. To balance things out, there is Orlando, Jericho’s bernedoodle. What a dog! He brings warmth and a touch of humor, and he is loyal, sensitive, and brave. His instincts to both comfort and protect make him feel like a true partner and I loved every scene he was in. This series also has a strong faith element. I love how scripture is woven into the characters’ journeys. It appears in their thoughts, their conversations, and in the quiet moments that follow. Susan May Warren creates such believable believers! Characters who are facing the everyday hurts and fears just like I am. Her stories are like a soothing balm. At its core, this story isn’t just about catching a criminal. It’s about forgiveness, healing, and figuring out if something broken can be rebuilt. Maybe even seeing God’s guidance along the way. If you enjoy romantic suspense with depth, faith, family, and a memorable dog, this one is well worth reading. I’m already looking forward to spending more time with the Bowie brothers. That’s what a new heart does.” No matter how many books by Susan May Warren I read, the author never fails to amaze me with her talent for writing fast-paced, adrenaline-infused stories packed with fantastic characters, wisdom from hard-fought faith, and tender romance. I particularly enjoyed the K-9s in this series and loved Orlando in this book. Jericho was a wonderful SMW hero, full of regrets, hurts, and pride, but finally arriving at the place of humility, surrender, and peace. Harley was a spitfire with her impulsive but keen detective instinct, intelligence, and tenacity. Their second chance romance was sweet and just right. I loved traveling down memory lane with them and soaking in the warmth and happiness before things imploded. The storyline continues to chase down the Sorros family, and this book shows that perhaps the villainous family is involved in more crimes than anyone suspected. The overarching story arc is not finished yet, so I’m looking forward to the next book. I really loved getting to know the Bowie brothers better and am hoping for a book with Hudson and Malachi as the main characters. “Sometimes all we need is someone to remind us who we are.” Loved this quote from Harley. She’s a wise lady, and I love her quote to Jericho. This is my favorite book by Susan May Warren so far. Fast-paced action all the way through. I grew to love Harley, Winter, Harley, Torfu, Orlando and the rest of the crew. I kept rooting for them too. They kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails in some parts. Others well.......those kisses? “Sigh,” y’all know what I mean. I loved the dog’s name, Orlando. Too cute. He’s a pretty cool dog, all in all. I really enjoyed the setting! The description was so vivid that I felt like I was there! I finished this book in one evening it was so good. I’ve always said there’s no place like home. But I also feel that it’s where the people you love that make it home too. This story will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck wow!
