Arriving at a boardinghouse spilling over with orphans and a newly married couple, Maya struggles to find her place amid the chaos. A new friendship develops between her and Eben Miller, the reserved, kind farmer next door, but just as Maya begins to recover from her wounded heart, more tragedy engulfs her. As she and Eben weather trials together, can they overcome the difficulties this new land holds when it seems so far from becoming home? Reviewer: Anna Bottoms Wow, this is the most heartfelt historical I’ve read this year. It made me smile, made my heart pound with anticipation, and brought me to tears. This is what good writing is all about. This book follows the lives of one family, their neighbors and friends as they face personal trials and find solace in one another and the God who comes through in the most surprising ways. I love the characters in this book. Each person has unique characteristics that stand out in the overall story — from Maya’s losses, to Eben’s gentle love and care for others, to Erik’s shame, and Amalia’s heart for orphan children. I was drawn into their lives as though I were personally part of their story. If I had one negative thing to say, it would be . . . Wait! There is absolutely nothing I would change about this book. The author has a gift for storytelling that brings each page to life and leaves a lasting impression on the reader. I loved this book and highly recommend it. I was given a copy courtesy of Bethany House through Interviews & Reviews via NetGalley. This is my honest opinion of the book. Reviewer: Jeanette Durkin Wow! More than 5 stars for this book. I haven’t read the first book in this series, and I didn’t feel lost. The characters are written brilliantly! I connected with Amalia and Maya on a deep level. Amalia is literally the epicenter of everyone in her life. Her work seems unending, her compassion overflows, and her heart and home are open to all. Maya deals with more heartache in 6 months than most people do in their entire lives. Thankfully, Amalia and her brother stand beside her and encourage her. She also opens her heart to 2 special men! Amalia has provided a type of sanctuary for those who have been orphaned. Her faith in God stabilizes her. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? “ I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley through Interviews & Reviews.
