An Honorable Deception

Picture
Author: Roseanna M. White
Genre: Historical Romance
Series: The Imposters #3
Pages: 400
Release Date: November 19, 2024
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers

In the trying art of balancing investigations and love, a detective must determine his priorities when faced with dangerous circumstances that could threaten everything he holds dear.

As the leader of the Imposters, an elite private investigative firm, Lord Yates Fairfax has made an art of concealing his identity. But when his newest client, the beautiful Lady Alethia Barremore, is shot while leaving their meeting, he throws caution to the wind and rushes to her aid. Though Lady Alethia thought she was only looking for her missing former nanny, she has clearly stumbled upon something much more dangerous.

Lady Lavinia Hemming suspects her longtime friends hold more secrets than they're willing to admit, and when she stumbles upon the truth that they're the esteemed Imposters, she recruits herself into the firm. While she is happy for the distraction of an investigation, Lavinia's own family secrets continue to haunt her. And the one thing bringing laughter back into her life--her friendship with Yates--lands her squarely on the disagreeable side of her best friend: his sister.

Tormented by a past she doesn't dare voice aloud, Lady Alethia does what she can to help her handsome host, her new friends, and the investigators. But as clues lead them deeper into the dark side of society, Alethia, Yates, and Lavinia learn anew that the gentry isn't always noble . . . even as they fight to hold fast to their own honor.

“Her value wasn’t in whose daughter she was, or whose friend, or in what human loved her. Whether her neighbors and peers respected her or not wasn’t the crux of the matter. Her value was in being a child of God- and pleasing him in her actions was what she must seek above all.”

I loved seeing the Fairfax siblings from a different perspective than the previous books and enjoyed their hilarious banter. They were positively brilliant.

I also loved the faith content in this book.

Here’s a quote that pretty well sums up this unique Brit detectives series:

“But in a way, this was what they’d been training for all their lives. A well-stocked set. A perfectly ordered stage. They knew their lines and when to hit their marks.

A few well-timed flashes, some theater tricks, a few acrobatics, and the show would go off according to plan. Probably.”

I’m sorry to see this series end, but it’s been a fun ride.

An Honorable Deception is a historical mystery tale full of suspense, humor and forgiveness that I definitely enjoyed, and highly recommend.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for the complimentary paperback I received to review through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.

I want to start this review by saying what an amazing cover and an adventure! My favorite book in this series.

I just now finished it and stayed up until 3:00 am to see if Yates accomplished his mission. Yates is an interesting fellow. I like him cause he’s outgoing and cares about others.

There are lots of interesting other characters as well with a fast-paced plot that will keep you guessing. I loved this book because the plot picks up from the beginning and keeps the readers involved until the end.

I felt sorry for Lady Alethia, but I also rooted for her as well. She’s my favorite character. I love her personality and her determination to help the Impostors.

This has been a wonderful series that I very much enjoyed. I hated to see it end, but I’m glad it went out with a bang. I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Five stars from me for keeping me invested. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic! This book blew me away! It’s book three of the Imposters series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I’d recommend reading A Beautiful Disguise and A Noble Scheme first as they provide the background of the imposters and key characters.

The characters are brilliantly written! Yates has been my favorite from the beginning, and he’s still number one in my eyes! Lavinia amazed me with her courage and willingness to learn new skills. Alethia is a wonderful character. She has been hurt deeply by a family member. Her beloved Ayah is missing, and she is determined to find her again.

There are some difficult issues brought up in the book: abandonment, trafficking, abuse, betrayals and murder. As the author states in her note, these are difficult subjects, but we are not oblivious and can change them just like the characters in this book did.

There’s also the adorable Penelope who can brighten up anyone’s day. Babies are born, and there’s a sweet romance with a proposal that involves a trapeze!

I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers through Interviews & Reviews. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Six years later, he'd learned to look at her without that punch to his gut."

And it's a good thing that he had because Lord Yates Fairfax is suddenly tasked with overseeing the care of another particularly lovely young woman, a client actually, who was shot three times after meeting with Yates in his role as the leader of an elite private investigative firm cleverly named the Imposters. Lady Alethia Barremore may think that she has hired the group to locate her missing nanny, but apparently has unintentionally involved herself in something far more sinister.

Lady Lavinia Hemming has been a shadow of her true self since recovering from heart damage following a fever. On top of that, discovering that her mother was a traitor... well, through it all, her best friends Marigold and brother Yates have been constants—that is when she didn't push them away. Could she discover purpose again?

When Lavinia offers to become a member of the "firm", she has no idea how rewarding it would feel to avail her skills or how difficult it would become to watch the one man she couldn't possibly fall in love with turning his eyes upon another, and rightfully so.

What's not to love about this beautifully written book? Swirling with danger and intrigue, the investigation forces the character dynamics into close proximity, as the circumstances grow darker and deeper within a despicable underworld of deceit. Emotions run high as Yates, Lavinia, and Alethia pull back layer after layer of hurt, fear and insecurity, eventually choosing hope over despair and courage over cowardice. But it is going to take them a while to figure it all out, gifting readers with chapter after chapter of an outstanding story!

"Is it wrong to pass one's time in fretting, instead of sleeping on the heart of Jesus?"

Wow! This series continues to get better and better. I got a deeper look at the purposes and personalities of the Imposters as well as their alter egos.

I loved learning more about Yates and the man he was. Full of honor and bravery, he will do what it takes to keep his family safe and bring justice to those that have no advocate. He’s also happy and brings joy to those around him.

Lavinia has been a friend to the Fairfax siblings for as long as she can remember. When her family fell apart they were there for her but now with Merigold married, and six years between a teenaged kiss from Yates, a long-term illness, and a new case involving a woman Yates is interested in, can she hold on to the woman she wants to be or will she sink back into the shadows?

This book was well plotted, painted a picture of the people and places that put you right in the scene, and had enough action to keep me turning the pages. There was also a thread of faith pointing to the One who guided their steps and spurred them toward success. Wonderful series. I recommend this book.

The Imposters are back! And their newest job takes them into the darkest places in London to free the innocent. With Yates leading the ever-growing team, he must not only help the new client before them but also decide the direction of his own future.

After such satisfying stories for the ladies in the previous books, it was time to focus on Yates to cinch the series. It was thrilling to be back at the Fairfax estate, with characters familiar and new, the menagerie of animals, and a fresh, new case to investigate. Although the crew is led to disturbing places, the author handles it with great care and tact. There is a definite Christian point of view that gives proper perspective to the evil the group encounters. I also loved the incorporation of characters from the Shadows Over England series. You will not notice anything amiss if you have not read those books, but it was a nice little Easter egg for those of us who have.

I appreciated that the book carried the same “voice” as the previous ones in the series, which pulled me quickly into Imposters mode. The author perfectly recapped background information by weaving it into the first few chapters, which brought it all immediately back to mind. The adventure unfolded smoothly from there, surprising me when I realized I was already near the end.

You could read this book as a standalone novel, but I recommend reading the entire series to get the full story. I have become so invested in these characters that they almost feel real, and I would love for them to cameo in other books. For the most fun, riveting, satisfying mysteries you will ever have the pleasure of solving, there’s nothing like the Imposters.
