Author: Gabrielle Meyer
Genre: Historical Time Travel Romance
Series: Timeless #4
Pages: 384
Release Date: November 5, 2024
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers

Caroline holds a deep secret. Living in 1727 and 1927 simultaneously, each night she goes to sleep in one life and wakes up in the other. In search of answers to her unique existence, Caroline stumbles upon a letter from her mother hinting at her own experiences as a time-crosser, sending Caroline on a daring quest to uncover the truth. In 1727, Caroline disguises herself as a cabin boy and joins a ship sailing for the Bahamas, her mother's last known location, where she crosses paths with a ruthless but handsome pirate and is caught in a web of secrets, deception, and unexpected alliances.

In 1927 St. Paul, Minnesota, Caroline grapples with her other life as the daughter of a renowned preacher. Her two older brothers have fallen prey to the corruption rampant during Prohibition, and Caroline struggles to keep their involvement hidden to save her father's career. As her search for answers about her time-crossing leads her to the dangerous yet exciting world of speakeasies, Caroline enlists the help of a childhood friend who is now a police officer. But with her family's future at risk and their loyalties tested, Caroline faces a life-altering decision that could reshape her destiny.

I really enjoyed this new addition to the Timeless Series. This is the fourth installment, and I recommend reading in order to avoid spoilers.

Caroline is full of questions about her life, which she needs answers to. So, she sets out to find them no matter the cost. In her two lives are two different men, and she has to make a choice. I do not like love triangles, but Gabrielle Meyer makes me forget it is one. Before I knew it, I was engrossed in the story, wanting to see how it would all unfold. The two timelines were easy to read and follow.

Gabrielle Meyer produces another amazing novel. There is adventure along with romance interwoven in the pages. There are also plenty of redemption stories in it and a strong faith message.

This book is clean. There are mentions of brothels and mistresses, but it does not go into detail.

This is the fourth book of a series that was supposed to end at three, so you know that a winning formula has been found! Author Gabrielle Meyer created magic with the first three Timeless books, but this new story exceeded all of my expectations. Caroline’s quest to learn more about her mother sends her on a time-traveling adventure that she doesn’t understand. Meyer’s vivid depiction of Caroline’s journeys between 1727 and 1927  is amazing and her portrayal of Caroline’s confusion is both intriguing and heartbreaking!

Across the Ages is a mesmerizing story with romance, adventure, mystery, and faith, but the history lover in me was especially thrilled to learn the many historical details that Meyer shared. The character of Caroline’s mother was based on two real people, Anne Bonny, a female pirate, and Bonnie Parker, of Bonnie and Clyde fame. She also used evangelist Billy Sunday as the inspiration for Caroline’s father. And there’s a mention of Charles Lindberg as well. I was familiar with Parker, Sunday, and Lindberg, but Anne Bonny sent me on a search to learn more about piracy. Who knew that pirates would be so enjoyable in the plot of Christian romance?

I was never a fan of time travel until I started reading this series. If you’re looking for inspiring stories that share the timeless messages of faith, hope, and forgiveness, grab a copy of this book, along with the first three in the Timeless series. I highly recommend Across the Ages to fans of historical Christian fiction.

Caroline lives in two time periods:  1727 and 1927

In 1727, in Charleston, South Carolina, Caroline’s grandfather told her she needed to marry a man she did not love. She could not imagine her life married and wanted to find out more about her mother, so she ran away. The last thing she had heard was that her mother lived in Nassau.

There was much speculation about Caroline’s ancestors being witches. It was hard for others to fathom that a woman could live one day in one century and live the next day in another century. That is why they were thought to be a witch.

Caroline decides to board a ship disguised as a man headed for Nassau. Caroline is a hard worker and has all the people on the ship fooled. Then one day their ship was raided by pirates and Caroline was taken to work as a cabin boy. There she meets Marcus, who she believes to be the captain’s son.

In 1927, Caroline is the daughter of a famous evangelist living in Paris, France. Caroline has a lovely singing voice and her father asks her to sing “Amazing Grace” before he preaches. She has mentioned to her mother and father even as a baby that she lived in two time periods. Her parents thought that Caroline had a very active imagination and dismissed her.

There was much historical significance to this story as Charles Lindbergh and Ernest Hemingway were brought into play.

I wanted to read this book because of the beautiful cover and the fact that I met Gabrielle Meyer at an author introduction event over a year ago. I thought the author did a fabulous job of explaining the lives of Caroline and all those who had entered her life.

Are you craving a fresh and fun read? Look no further than Across the Ages! In all my historical fiction reading (and that’s a lot!) I have never once read a book set on a pirate ship. It was fascinating! I loved every second of it. And the second timeline was so interesting as well! I loved reading the author’s notes at the end and discovering who the main characters were based on and the historical background of the plot. Gabrielle Meyer is a genius!

The romance was so tender, eliciting tendrils of delight while remaining perfectly wholesome. Who can’t swoon over a kind, handsome pirate hero, after all? This book was not just clean and wholesome, but it was also unabashedly Christian. An element I deeply appreciate and applaud!

You could read this book as a standalone and undoubtedly enjoy it, but if you want to maximize your experience, I highly suggest reading For a Lifetime first. I was so excited to return to Salem and read all the interesting little tidbits about the people there, especially a brilliant circumstance alluded to that I was so ecstatic to see confirmed.

I was very surprised to read in the author’s notes that this series was supposed to end after the third installment. I’m so glad it didn’t! Across the Ages was absolutely delightful. I think each book in the Timeless series has been better than the last! I’m so pleased to see a 5th installment is now planned as well, and you can be certain I’ll be among the first in line to read it. Gabrielle Meyer has done a positively masterful job weaving this series!

“None are so far gone that they can’t find their way back. ’Tis the beauty of grace and forgiveness.”

Gabrielle Meyer never ceases to amaze me. With each new book in the series, I am awed by her creativity and richness of history and character she weaves together to produce a masterful tapestry of adventure, hope, and faith.

This book was a little different from the others because Caroline did not have a mentor to guide her in time crossing. Her confusion, both in 1727 and 1927, in not understanding who she was created to be and not being able to fully embrace her identity, broke my heart. Her spunk, grit, tenacity, loyalty, and compassion in both timelines made her a lovable heroine.

Learning about piracy in the Atlantic Ocean during the 1720s and the spiritual revival during Prohibition was fascinating. I also appreciated just one love interest since I’m not a fan of love triangles. It was pretty clear which timeline Caroline would choose by the middle of the book, but the twists and turns in both timelines were mind-blowing and incredible. The tangible faith, forgiveness, and grace embedded in both timelines were uplifting and encouraging.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

“Everything about my life was one secret built upon another. A fortress of mysteries too high to breach. Some were the secrets I kept, and others were the secrets kept from me.”

This is a phenomenal story that captures the imagination with a unique premise that kept me turning pages. Caroline Reed lives two lives simultaneously in two different eras, but no one believes her. She wonders if it is a blessing or a curse because there is no one to guide her as other time-crossers had. When she finds a letter from her mother, she goes on a quest.

The author draws on a lot of interesting historical events in each timeline: Pirates in 1727 and prohibition, spiritual revival, and infamous criminals in 1927. It was fascinating to go back and forth to see how these events connected.

The characters were well-rounded. My favorite was Marcus, the pirate, and the 1727 time period was my favorite as well. Marcus was very noble and wanted to forsake piracy and live a more upright life. He grew in his walk with God and learned to rely on His leading.

Caroline grew up as the daughter of a famous preacher in 1927. But putting her faith into action was difficult for her because of the compelling search to find her origins as a time-crosser. If you like unusual but fascinating time-crossing stories, do not miss this book or series. I loved them all!

Across the Ages is another brilliant addition to the awesome Timeless series by a super-gifted storyteller who once again makes time-crossing believable!

As with all the other books in the series, I was completely immersed in this story from beginning to end. Imagine living two lives simultaneously—one on a pirate ship in the Caribbean in 1727 and the other in the USA in 1927! The twist in this fourth story is that Caroline Reed/ Baldwin starts out with no idea why she has what she considers a “curse” and is clueless as to how it works. The story that unfolds is her desperate search for answers about her past, present, and future.

Two well-paced storylines, wonderful characters, amazing history, sweet romance, and valuable faith lessons with themes of redemption and forgiveness combine to make an unputdownable, inspiring read. This book joins the other three books of the series on my Best Reads Ever list!

I highly recommend the book and series as must-reads for dual-timeline, time travel, and/or historical romance fans!

Even though Across the Ages by Gabrielle Meyer had a beautiful ending, I hope the author continues this series as I enjoy these romps through time far too much!

Throughout this book I kept asking myself, what would I do if I lived two lives like Caroline? Would I choose to stay in the time when the convenience of things like hot water, cars and electricity made life easier? Or would I choose love and give up all that? I have read all the books in this series and I knew Caroline would have to choose before her 21st birthday. And this is where this book takes a different path - Caroline doesn’t know a thing about the time-travelling rules and throughout the book you are biting your nails hoping she figures it out fast as the days get closer to her birthday. I could not put this book down!

The romance was awesome, as was the faith element. The message of redemption was well done, and I appreciated it.

While this book can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you buy all three books. Why deprive yourself of this incredible series? I highly recommend it!
